Taking Famvir

Take famvir exactly as directed by your doctor. Famvir treatment should be started as soon as possible after the first appearance of symptoms (e.g. tingling, burning, blisters).

Famvir should be taken with a full glass of water and can be taken with or without food. If you experience a stomach upset from taking famvir, then taking it with food food may decrease the stomach upset.

Continue to take the famvir that has been prescribed for you, even if you begin to feel better.

Side effects

Precautions

Do not take famvir if you are allergic to penciclovir (Denavir) without first talking to your doctor.

Before starting a course of famvir, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease. You may need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment.

Do not share famvir with others.

Keep out of reach of children.

Drug Interactions

Probenecid (Benemid) may increase the effects of famvir and lead to dangerous side effects. You may need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking probenecid.

Overdose

If an overdose of famvir is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
