How to use Lexapro

Lexapro should be taken once every day. Lexapro may be taken with or without food, in the morning or evening.

Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate) Side effects

Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate) is well tolerated by most patients.

The most commonly reported side effects of Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate) are nausea, insomnia, problems with ejaculation, somnolence, increased sweating, fatigue, decreased libido, and anorgasma.

Most of the side effects experienced by patients taking Lexapro are mild to moderate and go away with continued treatment and do not usually result in causing patients to stop taking Lexapro.

Precautions

Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate) can be taken with most other medications except another family of antidepressants called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Lexapro and MAOIs should not be taken together or within 14 days of each other.

Before starting a course of Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate), make sure to tell your healthcare provider if you are taking any other medications, including over-the-counter medications, herbal remedies, diet supplements, etc.

Drug Interactions

Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate) has a low risk of interacting with other medications in general.

The exception is the family of antidepressants called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Lexapro and MAOIs should not be taken together or within 14 days of each other. Caution is indicated in taking Lexapro with tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). As with other psychotropic drugs that interfere with serotonin reuptake, patients should be cautioned regarding the risk of bleeding associated with the concomitant use of Lexapro with NSAIDs, aspirin, or other drugs that affect coagulation.

Before you begin a course of Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate), make sure to tell your healthcare professional if you are taking any other medications, including over-the-counter medications, herbal remedies, diet supplements, etc.

Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate) Overdose

If an overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose of Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate), take the missed dose that same day as soon as you remember, then call your healthcare professional or doctor for more information. The next day, resume according to your regular Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate) dosing schedule.

Doubling a daily dose to compensate for a missed dose of Lexapro is not recommended.

Store away from heat and direct light. Do not store Lexapro in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places. Heat or moisture may cause Lexapro to break down.
