ACYCLOVIR INFORMATION

About Acyclovir

Acyclovir is indicated for the treatment of initial episodes and the management of recurrent episodes of genital herpes in certain patients and for the acute treatment of herpes zoster (shingles) and chickenpox (varicella).

How to use Acyclovir

You may take ccyclovir with food or milk if it upsets your stomach.

To clean up your infection completely, continue taking acyclovir for the full course of treatment, even if you feel better in a few days.

Try to not miss any doses.

Side effects

Side effects that may go away during acyclovir treatment, include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or headache. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Observed During Clinical Practice Based on clinical practice experience in patients treated with oral acyclovir in the U.S., spontaneously reported adverse events are uncommon. Data are insufficient to support an estimate of their incidence or to establish causation. These events may also occur as proof of the underlying disease process.

Precautions

DO NOT TAKE ACYCLOVIR IF YOU HAVE HAD A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION to aspirin or any medicine containing aspirin or to a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (such as Feldene, Motrin, Naprosyn, Clinoril).

DO NOT TAKE ACYCLOVIR IF YOU HAVE HAD A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION to a sulfonamide antibiotic (Septra DS, Bactrim DS, Gantrisin). A severe reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you have a question about whether you are allergic to Acyclovir, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

If you experience difficulty breathing; tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; or if you develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately. Do not take any more doses of acyclovir unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Don't exceed the recomended dose or take Acyclovir for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. Keep all doctor and laboratory appointments while you are taking acyclovir.

Acyclovir may cause stomach bleeding. If you drink alcohol on a daily basis, do not take acyclovir without first discussing it with your doctor. Alcohol use combined with acyclovir may increase your risk for stomach bleeding.

Before using any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any medicines that contain aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or ketoprofen.

FOR WOMEN: If you are pregnat or plan to become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using acyclovir during pregnancy. It is not known if acyclovir is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast feed while taking acyclovir.

If your symptoms do not improve within a few days or if they become worse, check with your doctor. If you are using acyclovir for genital herpes, begin using it as soon as you notice symptoms (pain, burning, blisters) of an infection.

Use a condom during sexual intercourse.
