Bentyl Uses

Bentyl is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome. Bentyl is believed to be effective in reducing spasm of the bowel and in the treatment of ulvers in combination with other medications.

Bentyl may also be used to treat other conditions.

How to use Bentyl

Take Bentyl exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include unusually dry mouth; excessive thirst; nausea; vomiting; difficulty breathing; blurred vision; dilated pupils; flushed, hot, dry skin; muscle weakness; unusual dizziness or drowsiness; restlessness; disorientation; and seizures.

Drink plenty of fuids while taking Bentyl unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Antacids should not be taken at the same time as Bentyl. Take Bentyl one hour before or two hours after taking antacids.

Side effects

The most common side effects while taking Bentyl Bentyl are due to its anticholinergic activity, these effects include: dry mouth, blurred vision, confusion, agitation, increased heart rate, heart palpitations, constipation, difficulty urinating, and occasionally seizures can occur. Other potential side effects include changes in taste perception, difficulty swallowing, headache, nervousness, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, impotence, flushing, difficulty falling asleep, nausea, vomiting, rash, and a bloated feeling.

Precautions

Tell your doctor your medical history, especially any history of: glaucoma, all stomach and intestinal problems, prostate trouble, problems urinating, blood pressure problems, contact lens wear, any allergies, heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, liver disease.
Use caution when driving or performing tasks requiring alertness if Bentyl makes you drowsy or affects your vision.
Bentyl may increase the risk of heatstroke. Avoid being outside on hot days as much as possible and avoid unusually warm places such as steam rooms, saunas and very hot baths.
If you wear contact lenses, Bentyl may dry your eyes, you may need to use eye lubricating solutions.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Bentyl may be excreted into breast milk. The manufacturer of states that Bentyl should not be taken while breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you are breast feeding.

Drug Interactions

Some medications may interact with Bentyl. Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you may use, especially of: phenothiazines (e.g., chlorpromazine, promethazine). Additional monitoring of your Bentyl dose or condition may be needed if you are taking a medication for emotional conditions (phenothiazines). Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding.

Overdose

If an overdose of Bentyl is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Missed dose


If you miss a dose of Bentyl, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and return to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses at once.

Bentyl Storage

Store Bentyl at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C). Store away from moisture and sunlight.
Do not store Bentyl in the bathroom.
