COLCHICINE INFORMATION

Colchicine Uses

Colchicine helps to prevent gout and gouty attacks. Colchicine also relieves pain and reduces the inflammation of acute gouty arthritis.

Taking Colchicine

Follow the instructions on the prescription label. Swallow the colchicine tablets with a drink of water. If you are taking colchicine tablets regularly to prevent attacks of gout, take them exactly as instructed. Do not take colchicine more often or in higher doses than instructed. If your doctor advises you to, increase your colchicine dose as instructed when the first symptoms of a gouty attack occur. Reduce your colchicine dose as soon as the pain gets better or if you experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach pains. Go back to your usual colchicine dose as soon as you can. If you only take colchicine when you have an attack of gouty, follow the above instructions when the first symptoms appear.

Special care may be required when using colchicine in the treatment of children. Speak to your doctor first.

Side Effects

Side effects of colchicine that you should report to your doctor, prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible include: blood in your urine, difficulty breathing, fever, chills, or sore throat, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting; numbness or tingling in hands or feet, pain or difficulty passing urine, skin rash, itching, stomach pain, swelling of the face or mouth, unusual bruising or bleeding and unusual weakness or tiredness.
Side effects of colchicine that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome) include : diarrhea, loss of appetite and hair loss.

Precautions

Visit your health care professional for regular checks on your progress. You may require periodic blood checks if you take colchicine regularly. Alcohol can increase the chance of getting stomach problems and can increase uric acid concentrations in the blood, which makes a future gouty attack more likely. It is best to avoid alcoholic drinks. Do not treat yourself with non-prescription pain-relievers without consulting with your prescriber or health care professional.

Your prescriber needs to know if you have any of the following conditions: an alcohol abuse problem, blood disorders, dental disease, if you are having intramuscular injections, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, stomach or intestinal disease, an unusual or allergic reaction to colchicine, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives or are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or are breast-feeding.

Drug Interactions

The following can interact with colchicine: Alcohol, antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen), cyanocobalamin, vitamin B12, cyclosporine and erythromycin. Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medications you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way colchicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
