About Effexor XR

Effexor XR is known as an SNRI (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor). Effexor XR is believed to help treat depression and the associated symptoms of anxiety by affecting the level of two chemicals in the brain, serotonin and norepinephrine. These two chemicals are thought to play a key role in depression and the associated symptoms of anxiety. Correcting the imbalance of these two chemicals may help relieve depression symptoms and the associated symptoms of anxiety.

How to use Effexor XR

Effexor XR should be taken as a single dose with food at about the same time every day, either in the morning or evening. The effexor XR capsule should be swallowed whole and should not be divided, crushed, chewed, or placed in water.

If you have difficulty swallowing capsules then the capsule can also be carefully opened and its contents sprinkled onto a spoonful of apple sauce. This should be swallowed immediately and followed by drinking a glass of water. Do not chew this mixture before swallowing.

It may take several weeks before you start to feel better. Keep taking effexor XR for as long as your doctor has instructed.

Effexor XR Side effects

Common side effects associated with Effexor XR include anorexia, constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia, nausea, nervousness, sexual side effects, sleepiness, sweating, and weakness. Effexor XR may cause an increase in your cholesterol. Only adults 18 and over should take effexor XR.

Precautions

Before taking effexor XR (venlafaxine HCl), tell your doctor about any medicines you're taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.

Anyone taking MAOIs should not take Effexor XR. Patients taking antidepressants should be watched closely for signs that their condition is getting worse or that they are becoming suicidal, especially when they first start therapy or when their dose of Effexor XR is increased or decreased. Patients should also be watched for becoming agitated, irritable, hostile, impulsive, or restless. Such symptoms should be reported to the patient’s doctor right away. Effexor XR may raise blood pressure in some patients, blood pressure should therefore be monitored regularly.

When patients suddenly stop using or quickly lower their daily dose of effexor XR, discontinuation symptoms may occur. Talk to your doctor before discontinuing or reducing your effexor XR dosage.

Pregnant or nursing women should not take any antidepressant without consulting their doctor. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, intend to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. Newborns whose mothers took effexor late in the third trimester have had problems. Because of those problems, the newborns needed long hospital stays, help with breathing, and tube feeding.

Until you see how effexor XR affects you, be careful doing such activities as driving a car or operating machinery. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Effexor XR.

Do not share effexor XR with others.

Drug Interactions

Before starting effexor XR, tell your doctor about any medicines you're taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. Do not take effexor XR if you are taking taking MAOIs.

Effexor XR Overdose

If a Effexor XR overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Missed dose

If you miss an effexor XR dose, it can be taken later that day. Do bot try to "make up" for the missed dose by taking two doses of Effexor XR the next day.

Effexor XR Storage

Store effexor XR at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) and away from light and moisture.
