GRIS-PEG (GRISEOFULVIN) INFORMATION


Taking Gris-Peg

Gris-peg (griseofulvin) tablets are to be taken by mouth. Follow the instruction on the grispeg prescription label. Gris-peg (griseofulvin) works best if it is taken with high fat food or milk. Take your gris-peg (griseofulvin) at regular intervals. Do not take gris-peg (griseofulvin) more often than instructed. Finish the full course of gris-peg (griseofulvin) as instructed by your doctor, even if you feel better. Do not stop taking gris-peg (griseofulvin) except on your prescriber's advice.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional before using gris-peg (griseofulvin) in children. Special care may be required.

Side effects

Possible side effects while using gris-peg (griseofulvin) that you should report to your doctor as soon as possible include: dark yellow or brown urine, confusion, increased sensitivity to the sun or ultraviolet light, loss of appetite, mouth sores, skin rash, redness, blistering, or peeling of skin, sore throat, fever, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, unusual weakness or tiredness or yellowing of the eyes or skin. Side effects while taking gris-peg (griseofulvin) that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome) include: difficulty sleeping, dizziness, flatulence, heartburn, headache, nausea, vomiting or stomach pain.

Precautions

Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not begin to improve within 1 to 2 weeks of starting gris-peg (griseofulvin) treatment. Some fungal infections can take many weeks or months of treatment to cure. Use gris-peg (griseofulvin) regularly and for as long as your doctor advises.
Oral contraceptives that contain estrogen may not work properly while you are using gris-peg (griseofulvin). Use an additional method of birth control and for one month after treatment.
You may get drowsy or dizzy, until you know how gris-peg (griseofulvin) affects you, do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires mental alertness. Alcohol may make you more drowsy, increase flushing and give a rapid heartbeat. Avoid alcoholic drinks while taking gris-peg (griseofulvin).
Keep out of the sun while using gris-peg (griseofulvin), wear protective clothing and use a sunscreen if you must go out in the sun. Do not use sun lamps, sun tanning beds or booths.
To help prevent a reinfection occuring, wear freshly washed cotton, not synthetic, clothing. After bathing or showring, dry your skin well.
Fungal infections prefer moist conditions, therefore do not walk about barefoot. You may use an antifungal powder once or twice daily.

Drug Interactions

Drugs that may interact with gris-peg (griseofulvin) include alcohol, barbiturate medications for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions), cyclosporine, female hormones, including contraceptive or birth control pills, primidone and warfarin. Tell your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your doctor if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way gris-peg (griseofulvin) works. Check with your doctor before stopping or starting any of your medications.

Before taking gris-peg (griseofulvin), your doctor needs to know if you have any of the following conditions: liver disease, on a low-fat diet, other chronic illness, porphyria, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an unusual or allergic reaction to gris-peg griseofulvin, penicillin, other foods, dyes or preservatives, you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant or are breast-feeding.

Overdose

If an overdose of gris-peg (griseofulvin) is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose of gris-peg (griseofulvin), take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next grispeg dose, take only that dose. Do not take double doses or take extra doses.

Gris-Peg Storage

Gris-peg (griseofulvin) should be stored at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Keep the container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medication after the expiration date.
