Lipitor Uses

Lipitor is a prescription drug prescribed to help lower cholesteral levels.

Using Lipitor

Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow lipitor with a drink of water. Lipitor may be taken at anytime of the day and may be taken with or without food.
Take Lipitor at regular intervals and do not take more often than directed.

Side Effects

Side effects while taking Lipitor that you should report to your doctor as soon as possible are:
Rare or uncommon side effects: dark yellow or brown urine, decreased urination, difficulty passing urine, fever; muscle pain, tenderness, cramps, or weakness; redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth; skin rash, itching; unusual tiredness or weakness; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Side effects while taking lipitor that do not usually require medical attention (but report to your doctor if they continue or are bothersome) include diarrhea; gas; headache; joint pain; nausea, vomiting; stomach upset or pain and tiredness.

Precautions

Tell your doctor if you have any of the followingconditions: an alcohol problem; any hormone disorder (such as diabetes, under-active thyroid); blood salt imbalance; infection; kidney disease; liver disease; low blood pressure; muscle disorder or condition; recent surgery; seizures (convulsions); severe injury; an unusual or allergic reaction to atorvastatin, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives; if you are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant or are breast feeding

Drug Interactions

The following may interact with Lipitor: alchohol containing beverages; amiodarone; antacids; birth control pills; bosentan; certain antibiotics such as clarithromycin and erythromycin; cimetidine; digoxin; diltiazem; grapefruit juice; medicines for fungal infections (examples: fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, miconazole, voriconazole); herbal medications such as Went Yeast (Cholestin®); drugs for treating HIV infections; drugs that suppress your immune response (cyclosporine); drugs to lower cholesterol or triglycerides (examples: clofibrate, colestipol, fenofibrate, gemfibrozil, niacin); drugs used to stop early pregnancy (mifepristone, RU-486 or Mifeprex™); nefazodone; phenytoin; spironolactone; troglitazone; verapamil

Overdose

If an overdose of Lipitor is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Notes

Lipitor is only part of a total cholesterol-lowering program. Your doctor or dietician can suggest a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet that will reduce your risk of getting heart and blood vessel disease. Avoid alcohol and smoking while taking lipitor and keep a proper exercise schedule.
If you are going to have surgery tell your doctor that you are taking lipitor.

Missed dose

If you miss a lipitor dose, take the missed dose as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next lipitor dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

Lipitor Storage

Store at lipitor at a controlled room temperature between 20 to 25 degrees C (68 to 77 degrees F).
Keep the lipitor container tightly closed. Throw away any unused drugs after the expiration date.

Keep lipitor out of reach of children.
