How to use Microzide

Take microzide tablets by mouth. Follow the instructions on the prescription label. Swallow the microzide tablets with a drink of water. Take microzide at regular intervals. Do not take microzide more often than instructed. You will need to pass urine frequently after taking microzide, therefore do not take at a time of day that will cause you problems. Do not take microzide at bedtime.

Side effects

If while you are taking microzide you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking microzide and seek emergency medical attention: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives), unusual fatigue, abnormal bleeding or bruising, yellow skin or eyes, confusion, irregular heartbeats or a fluttering feeling in the chest or little or no urine.
Other less serious side effects are more likely to occur while taking microzide. Continue to take microzide and talk to your doctor if you experience any of the following: dizziness, especially when rising from sitting or lying down, tingling or numbness in the arms, legs, hands, or feet, excessive urination, muscle weakness or cramps, increased hunger or thirst, nausea or decreased appetite, abdominal pain, sensitivity to sunlight or impotence.
Side effects other than those listed above may occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome

Precautions

Visit your prescriber or health care professional for regular checks on your progress. You should check your blood pressure regularly. Ask your doctor what your blood pressure should be.
You must not get dehydrated while taking microzide, ask your doctor how much fluid you should drink each day. Do not stop taking microzide unless advised by your doctor. While taking microzide watch your diet. Ask your doctor about both potassium and sodium intake. Microzide can make your body lose potassium, you may need an extra supply. Potassium that is too high or too low can cause problems. Some foods have a high potassium content, these include bananas, coconuts, dates, figs, prunes, apricots, peaches, grapefruit juice, tomato juice, and orange juice.
You may get dizzy or lightheaded. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how microzide affects you. To reduce the risk of dizzy or fainting spells, do not sit or stand up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. Alcohol can make you lightheaded, dizzy and increase confusion. Avoid or limit intake of alcoholic drinks. Microzide can make your skin more sensitive to sun or ultraviolet light. Keep out of the sun, or wear protective clothing outdoors and use a sunscreen (at least SPF 15). Do not use sun lamps, sun tanning beds or booths.
If you are going to have surgery, tell your doctor that you are using microzide. Microzide can increase the amount of sugar in blood or urine. If you are a diabetic keep a close check on blood and urine sugar.

Drug Interactions

Before taking microzide, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medications: lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith, others), digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), the cholesterol-lowering drugs cholestyramine (Questran) or colestipol (Colestid), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Nuprin), naproxen (Naprosyn, Anaprox, Aleve), ketoprofen (Orudis, Orudis KT, Oruvail), indomethacin (Indocin), diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren), etodolac (Lodine), nabumetone (Relafen), oxaprozin (Daypro), piroxicam (Feldene), sulindac (Clinoril), tolmetin (Tolectin), fenoprofen (Nalfon), ketorolac (Toradol), or flurbiprofen (Ansaid), a diabetes medication such as glipizide (Glucotrol), glyburide (Micronase, Glynase, Diabeta), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), tolazamide (Tolinase), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others or a steroid medication such as cortisone (Cortone), dexamethasone (Decadron, Hexadrol), hydrocortisone (Cortef, Hydrocortone), prednisone (Orasone, Deltasone), prednisolone (Delta Cortef, Prelone), methylprednisolone (Medrol), and others.

You may not be able to take microzide or you may require a different dosage or need special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medications listed above.

Before taking microzide, tell your doctor if you are taking any other medication to treat high blood pressure, water retention, heart problems, prostate problems, or any other conditions. Some medications used to treat these conditions may interact with microzide, the effects on the heart may be increased.

Microzide may increase the effects of other drugs that cause drowsiness, including sedatives, pain relievers, seizure medications, antidepressants, alcohol, antihistamines, anxiety medications, and muscle relaxants. Tell your doctor about all other medications you are taking. Talk to your doctor before starting any medication.

Overdose

Microzide should be stored at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Store away from light and moisture. Keep the container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medication after the expiration date.
