Zocor Uses

Zocor is a prescription drug that helps you lower the levels of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and at the same time increasing your levels of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol).

Using Zocor

Zocor usually is taken once daily at bedtime. Follow the directions on your prescription label and take Zocor exactly as instructed. Do not take more or less Zocor than directed and do not take Zocor more often than instructed by your doctor.
Continue to taking Zocor even if you feel well. Do not stop taking without talking to your doctor first.

Side Effects

Zocor is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects may include muscle pain (myalgia), constipation, indegestion, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain. If these effects become bothersome, contact your doctor.

Precautions

Tell your doctor if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness. Zocor may cause your skin to be sensitive to sunlight, therefore avoid long exposure to the sun and use a sunscreen and protective clothing.
Talk to your doctor if you have a severe kidney or liver disease before using Zocor.

Zocor should not be taken if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Talk to your doctor before taking Zocor.

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor of all prescription and non prescription drugs you are taking. Tell yout doctor if you are taking gemfibrozil, HIV protease inhibitors (such as ritonavir, lopinavir, nelfinavir), azole antifungals (such as itraconazole or ketoconazole), macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, or troleandomycin), or nefazodone then do not take this medicine. Before starting this medicine, inform your doctor or pharmacist about all the medicines you are taking currently. If you are taking amiodarone, "blood thinners" such as warfarin, fibrates (such as clofibrate or fenofibrate), bosentan, cyclosporine, dalfopristin or quinupristin, digoxin, diltiazem, fluconazole, imatinib, high doses of niacin (1 gram or more per day), rifamycins such as rifampin, St. John's wort, verapamil, or voriconazole than additional observation should be required of your Zocor dose. Without consulting doctor do not start or stop taking the medicine. If you have any other medical conditions including kidney problems, muscle problems, alcohol use, allergies (especially to other "statins"), pregnancy, or breast-feeding than immediately inform your doctor. You may have risk for side effects that can result in kidney problems if certain medical conditions’, including low blood pressure; severe infection; uncontrolled seizures; or serious metabolic, endocrine, or electrolyte problems arises. If any of these conditions arises than consult your doctor as soon as possible. If you have a history of liver disease or ongoing, abnormal liver function test results it is recommended not to use Zocor.

Overdose

If an overdose of Zocor is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose zocor, take the missed dose as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose of Zocor, skip the missed dose and continue your normal dosing schedulr. Do not take double or extra doses.

Zocor Storage

Store Zocor at room temperature away from heat and moisture in the container it came in. Keep the container tightly closed.
